Dr. Ramani Krishnakumar Appointed President of Ophthalmic Science Professional Council

The Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professionals (NCAHP), has appointed Dr. Ramani Krishnakumar, Ph.D, Faculty, Elite School of Optometry, Chennai, as the President of the Ophthalmic Science Professional Council.

The notification, dated September 2, 2025, issued under the NCAHP Act 2021, confirms his tenure for two years from the date of notification. The official communication was signed by Mr. Umesh Balonda, Secretary, NCAHP.

Profile of Dr. Ramani Krishna Kumar

Dr. Ramani Krishna Kumar is a distinguished optometrist and educator from Chennai, India, with over 30 years of experience in clinical practice, education, and public health.

He earned his undergraduate, M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from the Elite School of Optometry, BITS Pilani, along with a Master’s in Psychology and a Fellowship in British Dispensing Optics (FBDO).

Dr. Ramani served as Head of Optometry at Sankara Nethralaya for seven years and Principal of the Elite School of Optometry for sixteen years.

He currently mentors Occupational Optometry Services and teaches as visiting faculty. Actively engaged in community eye care, he contributes to Sankara Nethralaya’s DEED program, providing eye care to the elderly and special needs individuals at home.

He helped establish the Optometry Fellowship at Aravind Eye Hospitals. With 32 peer-reviewed publications and two books, his research focuses on falls prevention, low vision, and occupational optometry.

Dr. Ramani also serves on national optometry curriculum and professional councils, advancing education and eye care in India.

Notification

Govt of India, Ministry of Health Family welfare, and National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professionals(NCAHP) - Announced as Notification dated 2nd September 2025. In the exercise of the powers conferred by Section(10) and Sun Section(2) of Section 11 of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act,2021(14 of 2021) read with rule 10 of the NCAHP rules,2021, the National Commission for allied healtcare professionals (NCAHP) vide notification number 40/1/2025 - AHS - DOHFW Department, Dated 26.03.2025, has constituted ten(10) professional Councils.

In continuation of the above mentioned notification and the as per the section(10) of NCAHP Act 2021, the President of each Professional Council is hereby notified as Elite School of Optometry, Chennai.

The tenture of the President will be for a period of Two years , with ffect from the date of of the notification or unitil further orders, whichever is earlier.
